ABSTRACT

Laser optoacoustic method for local elastic moduli measurement of isotropic particle reinforced metal matrix composites is proposed and realized experimentally. The method is based on measurements of phase velocities of longitudinal and shear acoustic waves in samples under testing in the frequency range 0,2…50 MHz. Wideband acoustic pulses are produced by laser thermooptical effect. The thickness of samples under testing is 0,1…70 mm, minimal lateral dimensions - 10×10 mm. The lateral locality of measurements is 1…2 mm, the relative error of Young’s modulus measurement doesn’t exceed 6%, the shear modulus - 4%, Poisson’s ratio - 5%. The local values of elastic moduli of metal matrix composites based on aluminum alloys reinforced by particles of SiC with mean size of 14 and 28 micrometers, as well as by nanoparticles of Al2O3 are measured. The developed laser optoacoustic method enables one to analyze experimentally the influence of matrix chemical composition, as well as the composition, sizes and the concentration of reinforced particles on elastic properties of composite materials.
